Lindi Dedek

Hi there!

I’m a Berlin-based Czech-born artist, working with film and performance.

I’m into books, black tea, butoh, comedy, clowning, queer theory.
I love to dance ballet (badly) and eat cake (well).

Artist Statement

Born in Czechoslovakia just before the fall of Soviet-times, I’m interested in the ways in which the human and non-human is created, harmed and cared for in late capitalism under the imperative of nature/culture divide. I’m concerned with the possibility of reclaiming our bodies and narratives, challenging human exceptionalism as well as creating ways of mutual coexistence.

Fueled by feminist and queer theories that I studied in-depth during my MA in Gender studies, I use clowning, storytelling, experimental and documentary film to explore the connections between the intimate, mundane and geopolitical. Combining ethnographic data with site-specific and participative interventions,I am invested in art and artistic research as a collective creation, working with affected human and more-than-human communities.

During my mentorship at Schule Friedl Kubelka I (re)discovered analog film and fell in love with the guerilla filmmaking of super8 and 16mm as an antidote to the industry system of film production. My visuals and words come to light when I meander through cities and landscapes, my art production becomes  a process of personal sense-making.

In my comedic work, I create mischievous, often monstrous characters that parody neoliberalism, self-referential individuality and both lovingly mock and celebrate queerness.  I have a penchant for folklore, 70s fairy tales and obscure history and a strong interest in ecological decolonial anti-capitalist narratives in (Eastern) Europe.

I hold a Bachelor in Film Production and Scriptwriting (FAMU/Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg)  and have attended the Ecole Philippe Gaulier for comedy acting. Beside my artistic practice, I work as a short film curator at Neisse Film Festival, on the Czech-German-Polish border.
